Crypto Kidnapping Epidemic Hits France as Criminals Target Digital Asset Holders
A violent crypto-related kidnapping NEAR Paris has resulted in the theft of a Ledger hardware wallet containing undisclosed cryptocurrencies and €5,000 in cash. This marks the latest in a series of attacks targeting digital asset owners across France, with authorities struggling to contain the growing trend.
The 23-year-old victim was held captive until his partner complied with ransom demands, following a carefully orchestrated abduction in Maisons-Alfort. Criminals exploited routine activities - intercepting the victim while his girlfriend shopped, then using his phone to deliver demands via video call. A separate kidnapping attempt in Normandy was foiled by police intervention.
These incidents highlight the physical security risks accompanying crypto wealth accumulation. Unlike traditional finance, the irreversible nature of blockchain transactions makes victims particularly vulnerable when private keys are extracted under duress. The French government faces mounting pressure to address this new dimension of organized crime.
